Start thinking about growing things to eat around now!

Do you know that you are green fingered?  Or would you like to try it out, and not had the confidence to actually do it?   Its actually very easy to grow things to eat at home, it’s certainly not rocket science!  Don’t be afraid to have a go, people tend to think that it’s harder and more complicated than it actually is.

All you need is space  to grow things, but you don’t need loads – you can use a warm light windowsill, you can grow things like strawberries or tomatoes or herbs in hanging baskets or better still  if you have a patio or a bit of outside space.  You’ll also need if you are growing things in containers - a bag of compost and some seeds. If you don’t like the thought of growing things from seeds most garden centres will have produce available as small plants which will grow on really quickly and start you off, and don’t need potting on.  Follow the instructions about depth, spacing and positioning.

You can get potting compost and seeds from most supermarkets these days, or better still your local garden centre.  If you do your own composting – better still!  You can also use soil with well rotted manure dug into it – this is a good natural alternative to a chemical fertiliser.  Some vegetables like lettuce and rocket and radish are easy to grow – for a few pounds you will have enough for yourself and to give some away, and they can be expensive to buy.  Herbs are also easy to grow.  Other easy options to grow are potatoes (you can grow these in bags), onions, carrots, sweetcorn and beans.  Think about where you are going to position your crops, a sheltered spot with plenty of sun is best.

Once you’ve tasted the difference in your own homegrown stuff you’ll be hooked for life.  As well as saving money you are helping the environment, and you will know exactly what has gone in to your produce which will contribute to it’s fantastic taste and quality.  Not everybody likes the thought of their food being sprayed with pesticides or full of preservatives.
