The second film night is on Remembrance Day, 11 November 2011, when we will be showing the intensely powerful film Regeneration, based on the Pat Barker book of the same name.

The night will prove to be a very special one, with members of the Wilfred Owen Story in attendance.

Set in 1917, the film tells the story of traumatised soldiers being sent back from the trenches to receive psychiatric treatment at Craiglockhart War Hospital in Scotland. Following the death in battle of a close friend, and despite being of sound mind, Siegfreid Sassoon, one of Britain’s most prominent war poets, is sent to Craiglockhart rather than face a court martial following his letter of protest on the conduct of the war which is published in The Times, and is ultimately read out in Parliament.

It is here that Sassoon meets and helps another poet, Wilfred Owen, and the pair soon become friends.

Sassoon, an exceptional soldier known as ‘mad Jack’ for his suicidal feats of bravery on the battlefield, contemplates how best to follow up on his protest, and eventually decides his best course of action is to return to the trenches to support his men.

Licensed bar. Doors/bar opens 6.30 pm. Film starts at 7.30 pm. Stay behind after the film to enjoy this unique new facility in Hoyake and find out more about Wilfred Owen.
