Are you experiencing Domestic Abuse?

 

Early signs of Domestic Abuse:

 

SEXUAL VIOLENCE

 

  • Constant pressure “If you don’t do it, you don’t love me”
  • Blackmail
  • Degrading treatment/comments
  • Consent – Having sex with you while you’re asleep/drunk/drugged/unconscious
  • Aggression during sex (strangulation)
  • Involving other people when you don’t want to

 

PHYSICAL VIOLENCE

 

  • Pushing & Shoving
  • Spitting
  • Hair Pulling
  • Biting
  • Punching
  • Slapping
  • Strangling (including pinning down, using any force to restrict air ways)
  • Throwing things

 

ISOLATION

 

  • Cut you off from family and friends (Making excuses so you don’t go out “I’ve planned a date as a surprise”)
  • Using guilt “You don’t want to spend time with me***************”
  • Stopping you from accessing college or work “I’ll provide for you”

 

CONTROLLING

 

  • Monitoring your movements, where you can and can’t go
  • Locking you in/out of the house
  • Checking your phone/emails/messages
  • Going everywhere with you
  • Telling you what to wear

 

DISRESPECT

 

  • Persistently putting you down in front of other people
  • Refusing to help with housework or childcare

 

HARASSMENT

 

  • Following you
  • Not allowing you privacy (opening your mail, going through your phone)
  • Accompanying you everywhere you go

 

DENIAL

 

  • Blaming you for the abuse
  • Saying you “wind him up” and he can’t control his anger
  • Promising it will never happen again

 

About Wirral Women’s Refuge

 

Refuge provides a place of safety for women and children fleeing domestic abuse. We will provide information, support and guidance to resident and non-resident families. We aim to Empower women to enable them to begin a new life with their children in a non-violent environment.

We provide help in finding a safe new home and can offer support with:

  • Budgeting and benefits support
  • Accessing health services
  • Finding nurseries and schools
  • Accessing local community and cultural services
  • Gaining legal advice, including accompanying women to appointments and court
  • Safety planning
  • Training, education and employment support
