Yoga refers to traditional physical and mental disciplines originating in India many thousands of years ago.
The Sanskrit word yoga has many meanings including yoke or union, meaning the union of mind, body and spirit that study of yoga instils.
Outside India, the term yoga is typically associated with Hatha Yoga and its asanas (physical postures) or as a form of exercise. Asanas develop strength, flexibility and suppleness. They can be standing or seated and include backward and forward bends, twists and inversions.
Yoga practice can also include meditation and chanting (mantra), breath control (pranayama) and relaxation.
Yoga can enhance physical fitness in many ways. Physical benefits include helping you to feels more toned, stronger and flexible. A more balanced metabolism and improved cardio-vascular health can also result. Devotees claim that yoga promotes glowing vitality and youthful energy.
Mentally yoga helps you to relax and handle stressful situations more easily. It can teach you how to quiet the mind and focus your energy where you want it to go by encouraging positive thoughts and self-acceptance.
Spiritually yoga practice can build awareness of your body, your own feelings, of the world around you and the needs of others. It promotes the communication between body, mind and spirit and help you live the concept of total fulfilment.
